Chana Dal Tikki | Chana dal Cutlets | Kadalai Parupu Cutlets
A cutlet or tikki is a healthy appetizer generally made with any kind of minced vegetable or meat combinations with some added spices and can be enjoyed with any dip of choice.
In a tikki, since everything is minced, you have the flexibility to add whatever vegetable you like, to make it more healthy as well as interesting. Here in Chana Dal tikkis I have used some boiled Chana dal and potatoes. Chana dal is a very good source of protein as we all know, and if you want to add any other veggies you can add it.

CHANA DAL TIKKIS - Step by Step pictures
Take 3/4 cup of Chana dal in a bowl and add 1 cup of water. Let the Chana dal soak in water for 1 hour, since we are gonna cook it. This step is totally optional, You can even cook the dal without soaking but it'll take some more time to cook.
After 1 hour drain the water completely with a strainer and add the dal in a pressure cooker. Add 1 cup of water and cook the dal in medium flame for 2 to 3 whistles. After cooking, let it cooldown completely.
Now add the cooked dal in a mixer jar and grind it by adding some water. Don't use too much of water here, use 1 or 2 tablespoons. You can grind it in a way you like your patties to be, either finely or coarsely.
After grinding, transfer the paste into a bowl and add 2 boiled potatoes. Mash the potatoes well with a spatula and add in some salt, 1 tsp of red chili powder, 1/2 teaspoon of cumin powder and 1/2 teaspoon of garam masala. Add 2 tablespoons of bread crumbs, to make it easier for making patties. You can even add some more bread crumbs if needed.
Combine everything together well with your hands to make it as a smooth dough. All the spices should be mixed up evenly with potatoes and dal.
Now take small portions of dough and start shaping patties. Grease a hot tawa with some oil and place the shaped patties on tawa. Add some more oil for patties to cook them evenly. Shallow frying makes the patties healthier to eat, but if you want to deep fry them you can always do it.
Cook the patties on both sides till they turn nice golden brown color. Turn them gently using two small spoons or spatulas. Serve them hot with any dip of your choice.
