Red velvet cookies | Red Velvet Sugar Cookies | Red Velvet Cut Out Sugar Cookies

These brightly coloured, soft, melt in the mouth, cut out Red Velvet Sugar Cookies are always a win! They are perfect for Christmas, Valentine's Day, or anytime you're craving!

These fancy Red Velvet Sugar Cookies are extremely easy to make. Cut out the dough with your favourite fun cookie cutters, bake them in a preheated oven and decorate with melted chocolate or royal icing.

The cookie dough should be cold enough to prevent spreading of the cookies in the oven. Refrigerate the second batch of dough while the first batch is getting baked in the oven.

The cookies can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days. These are perfect, soft sugar cookies with a hint of cocoa and a pop of red colour. This will make these Red Velvet Cookies your go-to for holidays.

If you plan on decorating these, I’ve got two recipes for Royal Icing!

Check out my recent post on Royal Icing for cookies using both Egg whites and Aquafaba.

How to make Red velvet cookies

With an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, 4 to 5 minutes.
Scrape down the bowl halfway through and add in the egg. Continue beating until everything is well combined.
Add in the red food colouring and vanilla extract.
Mix on medium speed to combine.
Sift together the all-purpose flour, salt, baking powder and cocoa powder.
Gently mix everything together with a spatula until the dough just comes together.
Wrap the dough tightly in a cling film and refrigerate for 2 hours.
Roll the dough between two sheets of parchment paper to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters.
Carefully transfer the cutouts onto a lined baking tray.
Bake the cookies in a preheated oven of 180°C for 8-12 minutes or until the edges are firm.
Let the cookies cool for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
